BRISTOL -- The Bristol Junior Girls Softball All-Stars opened defense of their state championship with a 12-0 win over Waterford South on Sunday.

Sara Plourde and Audrey Boutin combined on a one-hitter in a six inning game shortened via the 10-run mercy rule.

Plourde pitched four innings, allowing one hit with five strikeouts and no walks. Boutin went two innings, allowing no hits, four strikeouts and no walks.

On offense, Bristol got going in the second inning. Chelsea Methot led off with a walk and singles by Plourde and Jen Rudzinski chased her around the bases for the first run. Plourde scored the second tally on a passed ball.

In the third inning with two outs, Kim Curry walked, Amy Carlson singled, Methot walked and Plourde drove two of them in with a double. Methot made it 5-0 by scoring on another Waterford South passed ball.

Bristol struck again in the fifth inning. Amanda McPhee led off the frame with a double and was followed by a Curry walk. McPhee was erased from the bases on a fielder’s choice on a Carlson bunt, but Plourde and Meghan Grenier followed with RBI singles to extend Bristol’s advantage to 7-0.

To start the sixth inning, Boutin led off with a double and Nicole Rudzinski followed with a walk. McPhee picked up an RBI with a single and Curry then loaded the bases by drawing a walk. Rudzinski took home on a passed ball and McPhee came around after a pair of walks to Methot and Plourde. Curry made it 11-0 on a passed ball and after the catcher threw the ball over the pitcher’s head, Methot came around with the final tally.

Both McPhee and Plourde finished the day 3-for-3.

Bristol and Waterford South will play the second game of a best-of-three series Monday night at 5:45 p.m. at the McCabe-Waters complex.
