Terriers cruise over RHAM

ROCKY HILL -- Rocky Hill coach Dave Coyne has no preference as to who plays well for him, as long as his team is winning. After the Terriers 31-7 win over RHAM, a game in which Greg Lappen was utilized more often than the Terriers normal top back Mark Fritz, Coyne admitted he had not even noticed the difference.

"Whatever works is what we go with," Coyne said. "We don’t pay much attention to who’s getting the ball."

In truth both backs were instrumental in the win, as they have been all season. Lappen had 124 yards on 19 carries while Fritz had a respectable 57 yards on 11 carries. More importantly, each found the endzone twice accounting for all the Terriers’ touchdowns.

The Terriers had no rushing plays of over 16 yards, overpowering the Sachems by averaging 5.1 yards per carry as a team. Control of the rushing game opened up the field for quarterback Doug Elliot.

Elliot went 12-14 in the passing game, finding six different receivers and totaling 166 yards. Sean Burgwardt had five catches for 82 yards, but it was the big plays of Brendan Held that caught Coyne’s attention.

"He made good positive yardage after the catch," Coyne said of the senior. "He turned it up, he broke a few tackles. He’s a great kid and he doesn’t get the ball as much as we’d like to, but there’s only one ball on the field."

Starting the game, the Sachems clearly made it their goal to slow the game down and possess the ball. By using most of the play clock on every down, they held the ball for almost the entire first quarter before Rocky Hill took possession. From there, the Terriers worked methodically.

Fritz capped off a ten-play, 62-yard drive with a nine-yard run for a 7-0 lead. A 52-yard drive in the second quarter ended with Lappen’s six-yard waltz into the endzone and a 14-0 lead at the half.

Fritz all but put the game away with a six-yard score with 5 minutes remaining in the third.

RHAM fought back on one big play a minute later. Ben Schadtle broke open a 57-yard touchdown run, outsprinting the Terriers backs to the endzone. It was a single mistake in a well played defensive game.

"He’s a good back. He’s very dangerous," Coyne said. "[It was] a mixup in that, yeah, we’re supposed to have every gap accounted for and obviously there was one gap that wasn’t accounted for."

Besides that play, the Sachems were limited to just 91 net offensive yards in the game.

"We were a little flat in the beginning, I think," Coyne said. "I think we did a much better job in the second half and we did what I felt we could do."

Kicker Chris Tyler was 4-4 on extra points for the Terriers and 1-2 on field goals, hitting a 28-yarder in the fourth.

Penalties hurt both teams. RHAM sparked eight whistles for 62 yards, and the Terriers were deducted 65 yards for their ten penalties.

RHAM is 2-5. Rocky Hill (6-1) will continue its drive towards the Class S playoffs with an important game at Plainville next Friday.
