"We were planning to throw the ball a little more today because Shamars ankle was probably only 60 percent," Marszalek said. "With him not in the run game, it changes the way we do things a little bit."
Carr threw touchdown passes of 40 and 80 yards in the first half and completed three passes for first downs in the other drive that resulted in a score. That led the Blue Dragons to a 21-0 edge at the break.
Because of a pair of turnovers, the hosts had the ball for only seven plays in the third quarter when Plainville closed the gap to 21-13. Middletown then scored the three times it had the ball in the last quarter to put the game away.
Other than the big play, Plainville coach Michael Archangelo was happy with his defense in the first 24 minutes.
"This is a team you cant fall asleep on," he said. "We gave the quarterback too much time. They beat us on the big play. Physically, I think we beat them. Our offensive line did a fantastic job; our running backs did a great job keeping the legs moving."
Plainville had several long drives but could not finish them off. Five times in the game the Middletown defense held Plainville on fourth down.
Middletown took over at its 21 late in the first quarter after stopping the visitors on a fourth-and-five run.
Carr teamed with Korey Speller on pass plays of 8 and 14 yards and then with Michael Bradley for 33 in a nine-play, 79-yard drive that opened the scoring. Jashone Cunningham, who ran for 47 yards, lugged the ball the final four for the score.
Two plays after a Plainville turnover, Carr found Cunningham on the left sideline in one-on-one coverage and the pair combined for a 40-yard score.
A fourth-down stop late in the second quarter got the Dragons the ball at their 16, and Carr lofted a long pass that Bradley pulled in on the run at the Plainville 40 and turned into an 80-yard score.
Plainville (4-3) ran for 251 yards with Kevin Czellecz (29-166) and Nick Forcella (21-68) doing the bulk of the damage. It was without sophomore running back T.C. Scott.
"He had some health problems this week but should be fine to go next week," Archangelo said. "We wanted to give him, on the cautious side, a week off. Hes a young kid and I didnt want to put him out there at risk."
During the halftime break, Archangelo urged his side to hit harder.
"We knew going in Middletown is not a physical team," he said. "They dont like to play physical. At halftime I told the kids to play a more physical game. In the second half we created a couple of turnovers. We were able to take advantage of that, but we still gave up the big plays."
The Blue Devils scored six plays after an interception and then five after a fumble recovery to make it 21-13.
Middletown, which went back to its running game in the second half, answered.
In the final quarter Cunningham rolled left and just got into the end zone in the left corner to widen the margin to 27-13 before Carr tacked on touchdowns runs of seven and 26 to provide the final margin.
