"I think any one of perhaps five teams could win it," Morgan coach Jim McCusker said.
How balanced is the division? Five different teams have multiple wrestlers seeded first but no team has more than two No. 1 seeds.
Adding to the intrigue is that most of the top contenders have squared off during the season.
Morgan, which is not in a conference, has cut its teeth against one of the toughest schedules in Class S.
"I dont think it hurts us," McCusker said of not having a conference tournament to prepare for the state championships.
"It enables us to wrestle tough competition. I try to schedule a lot of SCC teams. This year we were undefeated (against SCC teams). We beat Hand and Derby."
L:ast ride for Spartans
After four years of sweaty practice sessions, tears of joy and thrilling victories, all that remains for the most successful senior class in Amitys wrestling history is one last meet.
The Spartans, led by their star-studded senior class, is expected to make a run at a top-five finish at this weekends Class LL championships at Shelton High.
While seniors like Brandon Stavola (135), Donald Torrenti (125) and Lou Bruni (275) are expected to qualify for next weeks State Open, the Class LL meet will mark the last hurrah for the Spartans seniors as a unit.
Seven-time defending champion Danbury is the heavy favorite to win the LL title again. Fairfield, Glastonbury, New Milford, Amity- and fellow SCC power Xavier are among the teams expected to vie for top-five finishes.
"Our goals are the same," Xavier coach Mike Cunningham said. "We both want to finish in the top five. We will be rooting for them to do well and I am sure they will be pulling for us as well."
